The department also houses the records of the University Archives related to the health science colleges. Many of the historical materials focus on the development of the health sciences in Chicago and the Midwest. The Special Collections and University Archives is open to the public and provides reference, photocopying, and photographic reproduction services. Holdings: The strengths of Special Collections and University Archives are neurology, urology, dermatology, and the history of medicine, including collections of early anatomies, herbals, pharmacopeias, and formularies. Initially, the museum consisted of pathological dental specimens; however, as the school’s reputation grew, prominent dentists donated artifacts. In 1923 the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery merged with the University of Maryland’s dental department, and the museum’s collection was expanded. In 1988 the museum was reorganized as the National Museum of Dentistry. In 1996 the museum occupied its present facility, a 1904 building that originally housed the Dental Department of the University of Maryland, located on the campus of the University of Maryland at Baltimore. In 2003 the U. S. Congress designated the museum as the official museum of the dental profession. The National Museum of Dentistry is a Smithsonian Affiliate museum. Materials of worldwide interest dating from the 16th century well into the 20th century are part of this growing collection. The special mission and focus of the History Collections is on primary care practices in eastern North Carolina. In keeping with this focus, the Library supports an Oral History Program, recording and archiving interviews with long-time health care providers.
