    Abstract: The Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead is a restored house museum, built 1854. Dr. & Sarah Pound were one of the founding families of Dripping Springs. Dr. Pound studied at the University of Kentucky in Louiseville. He practiced medicine in the house until shortly before he died in 1914. Our collection consists of medical instruments, journals, textbooks, daybooks, textiles. We also have an extensive collection of pharmaceuticals and containers. All items were used by Dr. Pound. Also, Dr. Pound's medical ledger with patient names, treatment, etc. We are currently beginning to catalog the collection with assistance of graduate students in Preservation Studies at the University of Texas, Austin. Our Collections Management Policy allows for public inspection of the collection at the Museum, subject to preservation requirements of the artifact and availability of museum staff or volunteers. Appointments for artifact research will be made in advance with the Executive Director, access is not guaranteed without an appointment. For extensive use of the Museum Collection, a researcher is to submit a research proposal prior to the visit.

    Abstract: The Kendall Reed Rare Book Room at the Des Moines University Library contains both the Des Moines University Archives and the University's historical book collection. The University Archives preserves records of enduring value pertaining to Des Moines University and its antecedent institutions. It contains approximately 1,700 linear feet of rare books, images, audio-visual materials, publications and artifacts that interpret the history of Des Moines University. The collection also includes documents and photographs from the University's administrative departments as well as the personal papers of prominent University administrators, faculty, and alumni. The Des Moines University historical book collection grew out of donations from the personal libraries of Dr. George A. Still and school founder Dr. Summerfield Saunders Still. The collection of approximately 2,000 volumes contain books and journals related to the history of osteopathy, history of podiatry, surgical anatomy, military medicine and the history of medical education; and dates from the 17th century to the present day. Historical books do not circulate, nor are they available through interlibrary loan. However, we do photocopy materials for interlibrary loan and for onsite researchers if the materials are not too fragile. Materials from the University Archives and historical book collection may be used in the Kendall Reed Rare Book Room, which is located in the University library on the second floor of the Student Education Center and is normally open from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM weekdays. The Rare Book Room is closed on weekends and University holidays. Appointments are strongly recommended and may be made by contacting the archivist at 515-271-1566
    Holdings: The archives and rare book collection encompasses approximately 2,000 rare books and journals.

    Abstract: The International Museum of Surgical Science is located in Chicago's historic Gold Coast neighborhood and is host to over 10,000 square feet of gallery space devoted to the history of surgery. The Museum is devoted to showcasing both the art and science of surgery. The Museum's library includes over 4,000 rare medical texts, some dating back to the early 1500's. The library can only be accessed through research appointments and no photocopying is allowed.

    Abstract: The collection includes printed materials, medical books; ledgers of accounts, some office fixtures old exam/opperating table, various instruments, 2 early 20th century health machines, and miscellaneous personal items from several doctors. There are no general restrictions. The Museuem's hours of operation are Tuesday thru Friday 12:00 noon till 4:00 pm, and Saturday 1:00 pm till 5:00 pm.
    Holdings: The museum's holdings include: 2 ledgers, and several medical books. For the most part materials date from the first and second quarter of the 20th century, and the last quarter of the 19th century.

    Abstract: The Office of Medical History and Archives oversees the Archives of the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS), collecting and preserving materials that document the history of UMMS. It also supports historical research, teaching, and other activities that highlight the history of UMMS and the history of American medicine and health care, with special emphasis on the 20th century. The Archives contains the personal and institutional records of the administration, faculty, students, and other staff of UMMS, including oral history interviews, publications, photographs, etc. Our special collections comprise of approximately 3000 volumes published between the 16th through the early 20th centuries. One-third of these volumes are on permanent loan from the Worcester Medical Library; most of the remaining volumes were purchased for the Library from the Pittsburg Academy of Medicine in 1969, while some are donations. Our 40 archival collections include the records and papers of the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research (formerly the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology), the site of the development of the birth control pill by Gregory Pincus and M. C. Chang. We also collect secondary source materials (books, CDs, and DVDs) in the subject areas of History of Medicine, and Women in Medicine. We provide standard archival reference services: photocopying and scanning. Rare books may not be borrowed, but our collections in the History of Medicine, Women in Medicine, and Humanities in Medicine are all available for borrowing.     Holdings: In addition to 779 volumes in combined History of Medicine/Women in Medicine book collection, and 632 volumes in the Humanities in Medicine collection, the UMMS Archives consists of 40 collections (160 linear feet), with strengths in the history of modern medical education, and the history of endocrine and human reproductive research. Five particularly rich collections include: 1. The H. Brownell Wheeler, M.D. papers, including materials relating to the founding and history of UMass Medical School and the Department of Surgery, the history of palliative care in Massachusetts and at UMMS, and the history of the Center for Mindfulness; 2. The Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research papers, including many photographs of Gregory Pincus, M. C. Chang, Hudson and Mahlon Hoagland, and other researchers; 3. A collection of 45 Oral Histories pertaining to the history of UMMS; 4. Daybooks and prescribing manuals for Dr. Milman Pease, early-to-mid-20th century general practitioner from Brookfield in central Massachusetts; 5. Manuscript letters and essays from Dr. Royal Watkins, Worcester, Massachusetts surgeon from the 1890s through the 1930s.
