The collection includes all pre-1901 imprints and other rare and valuable published works, as well as archival records and personal papers, historical image collection, medical museum collection, and oral history collections. SERVICES: The materials do not circulate, but photocopying and scanning are permitted on a per-page fee schedule. The History of Medicine Reading Room is open to researchers by appointment Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Holdings: As of 2009, OHSU Historical Collections and Archives holds roughly 6,000 published volumes and approximately 1300 linear feet of processed archival material, with new collections being processed on an ongoing basis. Our primary mission is to preserve and provide access to the Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Papers. Linus Pauling (1901-1994), a 1922 OSU graduate and the only recipient of two unshared Nobel Prizes, (Chemistry, 1954; Peace, 1962) undertook a wide range of studies during his seventy-year career as a scientist, humanitarian and peace activist. All individuals with a legitimate scholarly interest are welcome to conduct on-site research in the Pauling Papers. The Special Collections hours are 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday. Programs include: Doctorate of Chiropractic, baccalaureate in Human Biology, masters of Sports and Exercise Science and a school of massage. Appropriate to the various curricula, the W. A. Budden Library at UWS hosts a modern medical collection of 17,000 volumes (approx.) with focused areas on chiropractic technique, functional medicine, manual therapies, radiology, sports medicine and rehabilitation, nutrition and massage. The W. A. Budden Library, which houses the historical materials, including books, journals and archives actively participates in Inter-library loan. Historical materials can be photocopied onsite, depending on its condition. The library’s hours are: Monday – Thursday 7:00 am – 10:00 pm, Friday 7:00 am – 6:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Hours during campus breaks are: Monday-Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Founded in 1904, the University of Western States is the second oldest continuing chiropractic program in the United States. Of interest to historians is a heritage collection that includes the incunabula of chiropractic literature as well as early works, journals, ephemera and papers from the Vitalist, Eclectic, Naturopathic , Osteopathic, and Naprapathic alternative medicine communities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The archive also holds an assortment of artifacts and equipment used by early chiropractic and naturopathic practitioners. Realia, papers and historical photographs are available to visiting scholars by appointment. Digitization of historical photographs and papers is ongoing. Holdings: The W. A.
