    Abstract: The Center for the History of Family Medicine was established in 1992 by the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation and serves as the primary historical repository on the history and evolution of General Practice, Family Practice, and the specialty of Family Medicine in the United States. The main areas of the collection are: 1) Official records and artifacts of Family Medicine organizations, including the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP); the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (AAFP/F); the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM); the Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM), the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors Practice (AFMRD); the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG), and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM); 2) Personal papers and artifacts from individuals such as prominent family physicians and Family Medicine leaders, researchers, and educators; and 3) Books, articles and other general materials which document the history and evolution of Family Medicine in American society. SERVICES: Photocopying; duplication of photographs, CDs, DVDsvideotapes and audiotapes available on order. Materials do not circulate. Collections are open to the public although some collections have restricted access. Appointments must be made in advance for offsite researchers. Reference services include searches and duplication orders.

    Holdings: The collection includes approximately 2,000 linear feet of processed archival materials, library books and reference files and artifacts. The bulk of the collection consists of official records and artifacts of the seven Family Medicine organizations listed above, and the papers of individual family physicians and Family Medicine leaders, researchers, and educators. In addition to textual and artifact materials, the Center holds a significant collection of books relating to the history and evolution of Family Medicine in the United States. Also included are photographs, slides, films, videotapes, CDs, DVDs and audiotapes. Several collections of oral history interviews with AAFM past presidents and other leaders in the field are also available.

    Abstract: Clendening Library collects primary and secondary material pertinent to the history and philosophy of medicine, including the subject area of biomedical ethics. The library's collection includes books, journals, medical instruments and artifacts, prints, photographs, original art, manuscripts and videotapes. Format emphasis is on printed works; the collection contains approximately 26,000 volumes; the library receives 40 current journals. The University of Kansas Medical Center Archives is an associated collection (Nancy Hulston, Archivist, (913) 588 7243). SERVICES: Reference, photocopy, photography, tours, lectures, exhibits, consulting.     Holdings: Most of the acquisitions are in OCLC and the Library's online catalog. Approximate interim figures for holdings: Incunabula: 20 titles; 16th century: 100 titles; 17th century: 200 titles; 18th century: 400 titles; 19th century: 1,400 titles. Uncataloged museum artifacts: 1,000 items; portrait file: 1,000 photographs/engravings; caricatures: 200 items; manuscripts: 150 linear feet; original art: 100 items. Special collections include: Shaw Collection (plastic surgery), Thor Jager Collection (pathology, anatomy, cardiology, Rudolph Virchow manuscripts), Haden Collection (microscopy, hematology), Skinner Collection (radiology, electricity, radium) and Logan Clendening History of Anesthesia Collection. We are currently processing the gift of the Leonard F. Peltier Orthopedic Collection.

    Abstract: Established in 1875, the Kansas Historical Society is a state agency, which safeguards and shares the state’s history. The collections consists of books, State records, manuscripts, photographs, and audio-visual materials relating to physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, & veterinarians; military & general medicine; medical schools; pharmacies; patent medicines; John R. Brinkley, the famous “goat gland doctor”; nursing; medical organizations; agricultural veterinary medicine; Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad & other hospitals; and World War II veterans’ oral interviews mentioning health & medical care. Also included in the collections are a notable amount of material on psychiatry, including records of the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas, its founders, and associates. The society’s State archives holdings include licensing files; records of health- and veterinary- related State agencies; and records of State hospitals & other institutions. The society's Kansas Museum of History holds an extensive collection of equipment from Kansas medical personnel, including quack medical devices confiscated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

    Holdings: Over 1700 manuscript collections, archival series, photographs, and other items relating to all aspects of medicine with related published materials and museum artifacts. Some records and collections have restricted access due to federal or State privacy statutes or donor conditions.
