    Abstract: The Oskar Diethelm Library is a special collection devoted to the history of psychiatry. It is part of Weill Medical College’s Institute for the History of Psychiatry and includes approximately 50,000 titles in English, French, and German dealing with psychiatry, psychology, psychoanalysis, mesmerism, spiritualism, phrenology, witchcraft and related topics. Journal holdings include long back runs of psychiatric journals as well as current journals dealing with the history of medicine, psychiatry and psychology. Archival holdings include the papers of numerous organizations and individuals. The Library is open to qualified scholars in the history of psychiatry and related fields Monday through Friday, 10am to 5pm by appointment. Photocopying is available.
    Holdings: The Library counts among its holdings nearly every edition of the monographs of important figures such as Emil Kraepelin, Sigmund Freud, Isaac Ray and Benjamin Rush. Holdings include significant collections of works in such areas as the history of hypnotism and psychoanalysis, the American mental hygiene movement, and the temperance movement, as well as religious and medical debates on witchcraft, suicide, and sexual behaviors. There are also many early and rare first-person accounts of psychiatric illness, alcoholism, and drug abuse. A collection of hospital and asylum reports of the 19th and early 20th centuries has been amassed, amounting to more than 3,500 items. The Library holds approximately 1300 volumes that pre-date 1801 including nearly 500 early medical dissertations of psychiatric interest published before 1750. Archival holdings include approximately 60 collections of papers from individuals and organizations vital to the history of psychiatry. Notable collections include the records of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the National Committee for Mental Hygiene, and the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry. The Library holds the papers of D.W. Winnicott and David Levy, making it an important resource for the study of child psychiatry and psychoanalysis. Other individual collections of interest are the papers of psychiatrist Thomas W. Salmon, Clifford Beers, the founder of the American mental hygiene movement, and Jonathan Webster, a mesmerism practitioner.

    Abstract: Established in 1972, the Robert L. Brown History of Medicine Collection contains more than 13,000 volumes of 19th century monographs with particular strength in the areas of obstetrics/gynecology, surgery, dentistry, psychiatry, pharmacology, and oncology. Additional holdings include a collection of more than 500 pre 19th century titles. The Collection also houses several special collections including the Edgar McGuire Historical Medical Instrument Collection that features medical and health sciences instruments and artifacts such as Auzoux anatomical models, microscopes, and a Staffordshire leech jar; a full run of the Buffalo Medical Journal (1846-1919), the Bonnie and Vern Bullough History of Nursing Collection; the Dr. Homer T. Jackson Collection featuring the notebooks and instruments of Dr. Jackson, a late 19th c. upstate New York country doctor; Historical Artifacts from the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; as well as a collection of early 20th c.     Abstract: Archives and Special Collections is the repository for the archival records of Columbia University's four health sciences schools: the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1767), the School of Nursing (1892), the College of Dental Medicine 1916, and the School of Public Health (1922). Archival records date from the 1780s to the 1980s and are largely from the schools of medicine and dentistry, though all four schools are represented. The department also holds records of Presbyterian Hospital (1866-1997), as well as records of hospitals that merged with it including Babies Hospital (est. 1887) and the Neurological Institute of NY (est 1909). Special Collections include books, periodicals, and pamphlets in the history of the health sciences from 1476 to the 20th century; personal papers of physicians, scientists, and administrators associated with the Columbia University Medical Center; records of the Maternity Center Association and the Visiting Nurse Service of NY; and prints, photographs, and some artifacts. SERVICES: Hours Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., by appointment. Reference by mail, phone, and email. Photocopying at discretion of department Head.

    Abstract: From the birth of photography through the modern age, The Burns Archive with over one million historic photographs is best known for providing photographic evidence of forgotten, unseen and disquieting aspects of history. The cornerstone of The Burns Archive is its unparalleled collection of early medical photography, but it is also renowned for its iconic images depicting the darker side of life: Death, Disease, Disaster, Mayhem, Crime, Racism, Revolution and War. Over the past forty years, thousands of publishers, exhibitors, authors, researchers, artists and filmmakers have utilized this unique source of visual documentation. Having produced dozens of books and having curated and contributed to frequent national and international museum and gallery exhibitions, The Burns Archive actively acquires, donates, researches, lectures, exhibits, consults, and shares its rare and unusual photographs and expertise worldwide.
    Holdings: Largest private archive of early medical photography (1847-1960), containing over 70,000 images related to the history of medicine, especially strong in nineteenth century imagery (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, etc). Our library contains hundreds of original journals, especially those related to medical photography, 1865-1930. Several books and articles on various aspects of medical specialties have been published from the collection.
