    Abstract: The Medical Library at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport (LSUHSC-S) understands the importance of our medical and scientific past and seeks to preserve this unique history. To that end, a variety of resources that document the history of medicine are collected. A website celebrating the history of the institution dating from 1869 can be found at: <a href="http://www.lsuhscshistory.org/" > www.lsuhscshistory.org</a>. The History of Medicine Room contains monographs and serials dating from 1743 to the present. Included are early medical imprints, histories of medicine, reprints and facsimiles of classic early works, biographies, journals and medical fiction. The Medical Library Archives holdings document the history of LSUHSC-S, as well as the history of medicine in Shreveport and Louisiana. Files of correspondence, papers, reports, photographs, slides, realia, and other primary source materials from physicians, professors and administrators, as well as those of local physicians, provide a personal perspective. Important collections include those of John C. McDonald, M.D., a pioneer in organ transplantation (see http://johncmcdonald.org/ for a website devoted to this work), pathologist W. R. Matthews, M.D. and LSUHSC-S photographer, Gordon W. Maxcy. The Medical Artifact Collection contains medical instruments and apparatus, scientific equipment, machinery and medical memorabilia. Highlights of the collection include a Civil War-era amputation kit, vintage electrocardiographs, microscopes, and early electroconvulsive therapy equipment. SERVICES: Located on the 2nd floor of the Medical Library, the History of Medicine Room materials can be consulted Monday – Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 11 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m – 11:00 p.m. Archival materials are housed on the ground floor and can be consulted Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Materials in the historical collections do not circulate.
    Holdings: Approximately 3,500 monographs dating from 1743 to the present; 20 serial titles dedicated to the history of medicine; 200 cubic feet of manuscript materials; 2,000 photographs; 25,000 slides; 800 medical artifacts.

    Abstract: The Amistad Research Center is a repository created to collect original source materials for the study of the histories and cultures of African-American and other ethnic minorities (Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and Hispanic-Americans). With over ten million unique manuscript pieces, it holds the nation's largest collection of primary source materials in the field of ethnic history. The collections show particular strengths in education, civil rights, race relations, business, fine arts, the courts, politics, and social history. The Center also holds a magnificent collection of African-American art and a large collection of African art. SERVICES: Holdings are available to the public. Photocopying, photographic reproduction, and interlibrary loan are available, with restrictions on certain holdings. The Amistad Research Center is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    Holdings: Major holdings in the Manuscript Collection include the papers of the following physicians and hospital administrators: Herbert J. Allen (c. 1943-92); Leonard Burns (1963- ); Ernest E. Cherrie, Jr. (1927-76); Arthur T. Davidson (c. 1976-84); Albert W. Dent (1928-84); Rivers Frederick (1893-1958); Joseph A. Hardin (1932-76); Clarence C. Haydel (1956-71); William F. Holmes (c. 1875-1911); Alexander L. Jackson II (1890-1981); Aubre De L. Maynard (1973-c. 1977); Isidore L. Robbins (1925-80); Robert Ambrose Thornton (1922-1982); Dr. Henry E. Braden III (1936-1994), who was also a member of WWII medical corps. The Collection also includes the papers of several women health workers: Ethel Mae Griggs (1967-71); Juanita P. Johnson (1923-28); Mary L. Mills (1962-74); Mabel K. Staupers (1930-77, n.d.). Holdings also include medical information relating to the following associations: The American Missionary Association (1858-1991), 173+ linear feet, including the papers of Dr. Charles Ryder and the Ryder Hospital in Puerto Rico; the Dillard University Papers, which contain photographs and records from the Flint-Goodridge Hospital; and the Associated Black Charities Records (1982-88), primarily issues of Blackboard, the official organ of this health and human services agency. The Center also houses numerous theses, dissertations, publications, and writings on medical issues, including the important essay, The Negro in Medicine in Louisiana, by A. P. Tureaud and Dr. C. C. Haydel, 1935.

    Abstract: The historical collections of the LSUHSC Libraries consist of rare and historic books, journals, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, photographs, prints, and ephemera. It also includes the archives for the LSUHSC New Orleans. All books and journals are included in the Library's catalog: (<a href="http://innopac.lsuhsc.edu/" > http://innopac.lsuhsc.edu/</a>). SERVICES: Reference questions, photocopying, and other duplications at the discretion of the librarians. On-site research should be scheduled.
    Holdings: Archives – LSU School of Medicine (1931-1965), LSU Medical Center (1965-1999), LSU Health Sciences Center (1999-present), LSU School of Dentistry (1966-present). History of Dentistry – collection includes World War I photographs (160) of soldiers with maxillofacial injuries and reconstructive procedures; nineteenth century dental journals; dental textbooks and monographs, 18th century through early 20th century; (250 volumes); nineteenth century dental instruments (50 items); early 20th century dental paraphernalia. Louisiana Dentistry - collection includes documents from the Louisiana Dental Association; instruments, equipment, and early x-ray rubes from the office of C. Edmund Kells; composite pictures of Loyola School of Dentistry graduates 1914-1971; documents from early dental schools in Louisiana. Medical Memorabilia Collection - includes an examination table, doctor's bags, instruments, and a porcelain bedpan. Medical Portraits Collection – contains prints and reproductions of famous persons in medicine. Medical Textbooks Collection – includes historical textbooks covering medical treatments and practical concerns from the 14th century through early 20th. Pamphlets Collections – includes the Louisiana Medicine Pamphlet Collection, pamphlets and reprints relating to medicine in Louisiana, covers the 19th century through early 20th; 168 pieces Medical Catalog Collection – includes a collection of medical catalogs (instruments and supplies) from the 19th century; 33 pieces. Medical School Catalog Collection – includes School of Medicine catalogs from the 19th century; 67 pieces. Miscellanous Pamphlet Collection - includes pamphlets and reprints on medical topics from the 19th century; 82 pieces. Yellow Fever Pamphlet Collection – includes pamphlets and reprints relating to yellow fever dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries; 174 pieces. Digital Collections includes materials selected for digitization from the historical collections of the university.

    Abstract: Touro Infirmary Archives houses the history of the hospital from 1852 to the present. Holdings include photographs, minute books, admission books (1855-1891), Touro Infirmary School of Nursing, Touro Auxiliary. There is a lot of New Orleans Jewish history as the hospital was founded and funded by Jews.     Abstract: The Historical Collection of the Rudolph Matas Medical Library was established with the founding of the Medical College of Louisiana (now Tulane University School of Medicine) in 1834. The collection consists of all books in the library published before 1871, works on local medical history, Garrison & Morton items, and American journals published before 1850. Strengths of the collection are medical Americana, military medicine (Confederate imprints and the works and reports of other wars), and the practice of medicine in Louisiana. Major documents in the collection include the Prospectus, relating to the founding of the Medical College of Louisiana, and the Registre du Comite Medicale de la Nouvelle Orleans, the minutes of the licensing board of Eastern Louisiana, 1816-1854. Images of both documents are available in electronic format via the Historical Collection web page. The collection includes publications, memorabilia, and miscellaneous rare materials on Dr. Rudolph Matas, Tulane University School of Medicine, Tulane School of Public Health, and Tulane Hospital Unit 24 in World War II. The special collections that are a part of the history collection include the Elizabeth Bass Collection on Women in medicine, the Diploma & Certificate Collection, the Louisiana Physicians File, Medical Art and Portraits Collections, Weinstein Medallion Collection, the Light Collection of Scientific Letters, the Dr. John Joseph Archinard Collection, the James L. Griffin Collection, and the Historical Library of E.C. Faust. Medical memorabilia and ephemera are also an integral part of the collection, consisting of such items as photographs, matriculation tickets, and surgical instruments.     Holdings: The Historical Collections contain approximately 4,500 books; approximately 56 American journals published before 1850; 15 Louisiana journals published before 1866. The Bass Collection contains approximately 320 books, 6 file cabinet drawers of clippings, pictures, and photographs; more than 3,000 portraits; more than 400 pictures on medical art.
