    Abstract: The Special Collections Department consists of rare books, archives, and a few manuscript collections, which relate to the history of medicine. The core of the rare book collection was purchased from Dr. Morris Saffron, and is rich in works on both dermatology and the history of medicine. Three other collections of note are: the Frank B. Norbury Collection (neurology and psychiatry); the Kemper/Buckmaster Collection (a 19th-early 20th century working physicians collection); and the William Moore Collection (homeopathy and popular medical texts). The archives consist of 334 linear feet of material dealing with Southern Illinois University's School of Medicine. A few manuscript materials are housed in special collections, mostly related to the central Illinois region. Reference service is available both in person and by phone. The hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or by appointment. Photocopying is by staff at their discretion.
    Holdings: The total number of volumes in the collection is 5,188. Current information on dates of publication: incunabula, 0; 16th century, 13; 17th century, 26; 18th century, 138; 19th century, 1,112; 20th century, 1,242. Archival size: 334 linear feet; manuscript collection: 11; photographs, 878. All rare books are available in the online catalog, and an online finding aid is available for archival materials. The collection also includes some oral histories.

    Abstract: The College of Physicians of Philadelphia is the largest independent research library devoted to medical history in the United States. In addition to the holdings accumulated while the College Library served as the central medical library of Philadelphia (19th and 20th century monographs and journals), the library also has extensive holdings of rare books, manuscripts, and prints and photographs, as well as the archives of the College and those of other medical organizations, local and national, extant and extinct.     Holdings: The Library contains over 250,000 books and journals published before 1966. More than 400 are incunabula, and more than 12,000 are pre 1801 imprints. Strong holdings in anatomy, surgery, dermatology, neurology, embryology, pathology, and ophthalmology. Particularly rich collections in homeopathy, tuberculosis, and yellow fever. Manuscripts number over one million items and include medieval illuminated manuscripts, hundreds of 18th- and 19th century student lecture notes, and the papers of leaders in American medicine, including Robley Dunglison, George Bacon Wood, S. Weir Mitchell, Joseph Leidy, William Williams Keen, and Edward Bell Krumbhaar and Francis Clark Wood. Archives of a number of medical societies and institutions can be found in the Library. The Library also houses the archives of the American Association for the History of Medicine and the archives of the College of Physicians in Philadelphia (founded in 1787). Prints and Photographs: A portrait/picture catalogue containing over 100,000 cards represents reproductions in books and journals, as well as original prints and photographs. Includes the Samuel B.     Abstract: Special Collections and University Archives in the Library of the Health Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago houses rare books and archives, including pre-fire Chicago imprints (prior to 1871) related to the history of the health sciences. The department also houses the records of the University Archives related to the health science colleges. Many of the historical materials focus on the development of the health sciences in Chicago and the Midwest. The Special Collections and University Archives is open to the public and provides reference, photocopying, and photographic reproduction services.
    Holdings: The strengths of Special Collections and University Archives are neurology, urology, dermatology, and the history of medicine, including collections of early anatomies, herbals, pharmacopeias, and formularies. There are over 23,000 volumes of pre-1930 monographs and pre-1900 journals and over 5,000 linear feet of archival collections, in addition to photographs, slides, and artifacts. We hold records from the pre-UIC health colleges, including the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago and the Chicago College of Pharmacy. Other archival collections include the Cook County School of Nursing records, the Illinois Occupational Therapy Association records, the Horizon Hospice records, and the Abraham Low/Recovery International collections.

    Abstract: Initially established as a medical collection for the use of physicians, the Library opened to the public in 1878. As a working professional library, the collection’s primary focus was first in contemporary medicine, but soon extended to rare and historical materials. The Library's current focus has shifted to building on its historical holdings, including current works in the history of medicine. The Library houses much of its rare book collection in the Drs. Barry and Bobbi Coller Rare Book Reading Room, which also contains many secondary sources in the history of medicine, the history of books and printing, medical bibliography, biography and dictionaries. Manuscripts and archives include the Academy's own archives, the archives of a number of professional societies and organizations, case books, medical student notebooks, and culinary and medicinal receipt books. These archives serve as a primary resource for the history of health administration, medical education, public health, and medical practice in New York City.     Holdings: Incunabula: 164 titles; 16th century: 2,100 titles; 17th century: 2,700 titles; 18th century: 7,300 titles; 19th century: 46,000 titles. Classics: 16th century European works, with special emphasis on anatomy and surgery. Works from other time periods: originals, translations, reprints of Aristotle, Galen, Hippocrates, Avicenna, Ketham, Malpighi, Jenner, etc. Original editions by the great men of science: Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Bacon, etc. Manuscripts: over 2,000, notably Apicius, De re culinaria (9th century) and Guy de Chauliac (15th century). Subject areas: plagues and epidemics; astrology and the occult; popular healing with emphases on diet, balneology, cookery and nutrition; medical Americana (late 17th to mid 19th century); European medical dissertations (17th to 19th century); early works on cardiology, including the two first editions of Harvey's De motu cordis... (1628); broadsides (16th 19th century) on such topics as public health and food regulation. The named special collections include, but are not limited to: Michael M. Davis Collection of Social and Economic Aspects of Medicine; Margaret Barclay Wilson Collection on Food and Cookery; Hayes Martin Collection of 17th through 20th century engravings and woodcuts; Beekman Collection of Hunteriana; Rufus Cole Collection of works by and about Francesco Redi and his circle; Harms Collection of pre 1900 psychiatry and psychology.     Abstract: The archives provide information on the Boston University Medical Center and its component institutions: Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine and Public Health, the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences, the hospital and its affiliates. Physical access to this collection is for onsite use only. Online access to a collection of BU Medical Campus publications is available via the OpenBU digital repository. SERVICES: Reference, photocopy and photo-reproduction. Researchers should arrange appointments to ensure availability of materials and workspace. The history of medicine collection is a circulating one. SERVICES: Reference, photocopy, photo-reproduction and library loan.
    Holdings: The archives collection contains 1 17th century title, 90 18th century titles and 375 19th century titles. The archive journals from 1848 to the present provide school catalogs, annual reports, in-house publications and yearbooks. The hospital records, primarily administrative and financial in nature and kept in file cabinets, cover 1855-1964. These encompass the Mass. Homoeopathic Hospital, the Mass. Memorial Hospitals and University Hospital—all predecessors of the Boston Medical Center. The file cabinet collections of the Medical, Dental, Public Health Schools, along with the Graduate Medical Sciences Division, provide administrative and budgetary information about the schools but also their particular education programs and research projects. The images collection of over 1000 items cover individual students, faculty, staff and alumni of the medical center and its components; class pictures from the different schools; buildings (interiors and exteriors) and environs of the past, present and future. The Medical instruments collection has 300 pieces used in surgery and general practice. The Doris Appel History of Medicine Collection of over 2200 titles, named in 1980 in honor of the well known medical historian and sculptor, has a wide variety of offerings: general sweep of history from antiquity to modern times; medicine in various countries and time periods; discoveries, trends and developments; rise of specialties; organizational histories; and biographies of famous physicians and those who are well known in their communities.
