    Abstract: The Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Kansas City is part of a four-campus (Rolla, Columbia, St. Louis, and Kansas City) program supported by the University of Missouri and the State Historical Society of Missouri. It collects primary historical research material from the western Missouri region. Materials include personal papers; business record; records of social, cultural, civic, educational, and political organizations; and an extensive collection of architectural plans. The holdings are open to the public, photocopying is available, and microfilm collections are accessible through interlibrary loan. In addition, all materials can be used at counterpart offices on the campuses of the University system. WHMC-KC is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and evenings by appointment.
    Holdings: Holdings with significance to the history of medicine fall into three categories: institutions, individuals, and related organizations. Institutional records include those of the Jackson County (MO) Medical Society (1892-1938); the University Medical College (1892-1937); the KC Medical Library Club (1911-1920); the Kansas City Academy of Medicine (1890-1924); the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1871-1905); and the Neurological Hospital Association of Kansas City (c.1936-c.1973). Collections of individuals include the Thomas Jefferson Eaton Papers (c.1870-c.1947); Rosa Barker Papers (1900); Nathaniel Chapman Medical Lectures (c.1820-c.1834); Edward L. Stewart Papers (c.1930-1940); James W. Parker Records (1851-1872); Paul N. Johnstone Papers (1956-1964); and Fred L. Seevers Papers (1913). Records of related organizations include the Nursing Heritage Foundation (c.1890-1995); the Missouri Nursing Association (MONA, 1955-1989); the Jefferson Davis Griffith Chapter of the Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S. (1936-1937); the Hughes-Simmons Drug Store Records (1874-1954); the Childbirth Education Association of Greater Kansas City (c.1975-1983); and the Kansas City Dietetic Association Records (c.1947-1983).     Abstract: Located on the campus of A.T. Still University/KCOM the Museum was founded in 1978, other family members, D.O.s and Museum supporters have donated many additional artifacts that reflect the ongoing history of the osteopathic profession. The research collections of the International Center for Osteopathic History also include many former holdings of the KCOM Library's special collections, for which the museum assumed responsibility in 1997. Researchers may work on-site in the reading room or write to the Museum with specific reference queries. (Due to limited staff, the Museum is unable to undertake extensive research projects on behalf of researchers). Researchers planning to use the reading room must call ahead of time for an appointment. SERVICES: The Museum also offers a variety of image reproduction services, including photocopies, photographic reproductions, and scanned images. The staff works closely with researchers to meet the specific format needs of different projects. Contact the Curator (museum@atsu.edu) for information and usages/research fees. Permission to examine materials does not include permission to publish them. Rights to publish must be requested in writing. Similarly, permission to use Museum collections, including publication, should not be construed as endorsement of the user's point of view or manner of presentation.
    Holdings: The collections of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine (SM) include over 33,000 objects, photographs, documents, and books dating from the early 1800s to the present (bulk 1870-1940). The core of the collection consists of artifacts from A. T. Still's professional and private life, most of them donated by Dr. Still's daughter Blanche Laughlin and members of her family. We also hold several collections from some of the earlier names in Osteopathic History such as Dr. W. G. Sutherland, Dr. J. S. Denslow, Dr. I. Korr, Dr. William Johnston and others.

It collects primary historical research material, mostly in a fifty-three county area of southern Missouri, but including special interest areas of mining, engineering, science, and technology. In addition, all materials can be used at counterpart offices on the campuses of the University of Missouri system with prior notice. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    Holdings: The collection includes material of interest to historians of medicine: correspondence and papers of pioneer doctors; county medical registers and record books; physicians' account books, day books, ledgers, medical notebooks, treatment records. Individual physicians' papers include those of: Dr. Thomas A. Barr (1841-1903); Dr. John B. Bell (1827-1896); Dr. James McComb (1832-1926); Dr. John B. Thruston (1815- ; Dr. William B. Williams (1837-1888); Dr. Paul C. Yates (1836-1907). Yates kept a remarkable journal (1880-1905) detailing the experiences of a country doctor (see information sheet at UMR web site). Papers of the Washington County Health Council (1932-1969); records of the U.S. Bureau of Pensions medical examinations of Civil War veterans; papers of the Chief Surgeon of the Missouri Lumber and Mining Company (1888-1918).     Abstract: The Division administers nine collections of rare books and journals, the Washington University Medical Center archives, and a wide range of pictorial resources and ephemeral materials. Begun in 1912 with the acquisition of Julius Pagel's personal library from Berlin, the collections are among the oldest in the U.S. There is a strong subject coverage in European medicine since the late 15th century and all periods of American medicine. The Section is open 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. SERVICES: include reference and consulting, and (with varying restrictions) digitization and photocopying. Special arrangements may be made for photographic services and tours. The monograph holdings and rare medical journal titles are searchable through the Library's Bibliographic Access and Control System, its E-Catalog and OCLC.
    Holdings: The Rare Book Collections include five that have specific disciplinary or subject focuses: the Bernard Becker Collection of Ophthalmology and Optics (see L. Wechsler, C. Hoolihan, and M. Weimer, comps., The Bernard Becker Collection in Ophthalmology: An Annotated Catalog, 3d ed., 1996); the Max Goldstein C.I.D. Collection in Otology and Deaf Education, the Henry J. McKellops Rare Book Collection in Dental Medicine; the H. Richard Tyler Collection of the American Academy of Neurology Library; and the Robert E. Schlueter Paracelsus Collection. The Classics of Medicine Collection, the James Moores Ball Collection, the Monuments of Medicine Collection, and the Rare Medical Periodicals Collection are more general in scope, although their contents offer strengths in such subjects as early anatomy and surgery, neurological sciences, and obstetrics and gynecology. The Archives houses materials primarily relating to the history of Washington University School of Medicine and its affiliated institutions. These materials include records of the School of Medicine Administration, the 19th century forerunners of the School, the Barnes Hospital, the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, and St. Louis Children's Hospital. The Archives also holds many personal manuscript collections, among them the papers of William Beaumont, Carl F. Cori, Evarts A. Graham, Joseph Erlanger, and Carl V. Moore. Collections of archival photographs of Medical Center staff, operations, and facilities include more than 50,000 items. Holdings also include oral history interviews in the ongoing Washington University School of Medicine Oral History Project. Many of recordings and transcripts are available on the Becker Medical Library web site. The Division is also the official repository for records of the American Academy of Neurology. See C.     Abstract: The Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia comprises manuscript holdings of both the University of Missouri and the State Historical Society of Missouri. It is part of a four-campus (Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, St. Louis) operation. The Columbia collection has a wide-ranging scope with materials of state, regional, and national significance. Its holdings span Missouri's pre-statehood days to the present, and chronicle aspects of the state and the trans-Mississippi West. In addition to onsite finding aids, access to collection descriptions related to the history of medicine can be found on the WHMC-Columbia's web page. Reference archivists are available to assist in-house researchers and to answer email, mail, and telephone inquiries. Photocopy services are available. The collection is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
    Holdings: The collection includes papers and records of physicians, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, and other medical practitioners; records of professional and advocacy organizations; and general material concerning health and medical care. WHMC-Columbia has the papers of John Sappington (1776-1856), pioneer doctor who successfully treated malaria in the Mississippi and Missouri River Valleys with anti-fever medicine (quinine); Charles Claude Guthrie, Sr., (1880-1963) professor of physiology and early researcher in the field of vascular surgery with Alexis Carrel; Daniel L. Mumpower (1802-1969), Methodist medical missionary to the Belgian Congo in the 1910s and 1920s; R.P.C. Wilson II (1876-1953), specialist in mental health research and treatments for epileptics in the Missouri state health system; Lee D. Cady (1896-1987), physician who advocated legislation for premarital and prenatal medical examinations; Howard Rusk (1901-1989), pioneer in physical medicine and rehabilitation; Katherine Bain (1897-1999), pediatrician with the U.S. Children's Bureau and U.S. delegate to UNICEF; John W. Connaway (1859-1947), recognized for researching livestock diseases, including brucellosis and Texas fever; Thomas D. Luckey (1919- ), biochemist whose research fields included animal nutrition and metabolism; records of the Missouri Nurses Association (1930s-1990s); the Missouri League for Nursing (1920s-1990s); the University of Missouri, Department of Anatomy (1908-1950); and the John H. Walters Hospice of Central Missouri (1975-1990). Finding aids for these collections and others are available on request or on the collection's website.
