    Abstract: The New England Osteopathic Heritage Center (NEOHC) honors the osteopathic physicians who served their communities in New England for over a century and continue to do so. The Center, established in 2003, maintains a growing collection of personal and professional materials that preserve the unique history of the osteopathic medicine profession in the New England region: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.     Holdings: The New England Osteopathic Heritage Center collects historical material representative of individual osteopathic physicians, organizations, hospitals, and legislative initiatives, including personal and professional documents, photographs and films, oral histories, medical artifacts, and memorabilia, building a greater understanding of the impact of osteopathic medicine on the advancement of health care in New England.

    Abstract: Maine Medical Center, together with its predecessors, Maine General Hospital, Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Children’s Hospital, has played a vital role in the medical history of northern New England. The Maine Medical Center Archives maintains a collection of material, which dates from the incorporation of Maine General Hospital in 1868 to the present. SERVICES: Materials normally do not circulate, but when appropriate, photocopying and/or interlibrary loan may be arranged at the discretion of the archivist. There is a charge for photographic reproduction, which is available in-house. Reference service is offered and advance appointments are advisable for those wishing to do research. Please note that some materials are restricted.
    Holdings: The MMC Archives' 200 linear feet of holdings consist of administrative records, 3,000 photographs, and materials pertaining to the Maine General Hospital/Maine Medical Center School of Nursing. In addition, there are bound, early case descriptions, hospital newsletters, audiovisual resources, and oral history interviews. There are minutes and annual reports of the governing boards and records of staff and volunteer committees of MMC and predecessor and affiliated organizations. The Archives also maintains a collection of artifacts, the earliest of which dates from circa 1850. Among these are nurses' uniforms of various eras, physicians' surgical cases with collections of instruments, pieces of medical apparatus, equipment, and memorabilia. The historic and rare book collection contains approximately 1000 monographs covering a wide range of medical disciplines, dating from 1767. These items are stored offsite and advance notice is needed to arrange for access.

    Abstract: The Maine State Library began in 1836 when the Maine Legislature authorized the purchase of books for the collection. The library provides services to the public and to librarians. Researchers can access library materials through URSUS: http://ursus.maine.edu/. The Maine State Library is open Monday 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, Tuesday 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. The library is closed on all holidays observed by the state of Maine.
    Holdings: Vaughan Collection - - Approximately 250 medical texts from the collection of Dr. Benjamin Vaughan, who lived in Hallowell, Maine (1796-1835). English and American imprints (a few French) from the late 18th to early 19th century. Items are stored in conserphase boxes off-site, but can be retrieved for use in the Library. Photocopying would depend on the individual condition of each item. Hubbard Collection – Approximately 200 medical texts from the collection of Dr. John Hubbard, a physician in Hallowell, Maine (1794-1869. Mostly American imprints from late 18th century to mid-19th century. Collection is stored in the original physician’s office building (Hubbard House) in Hallowell. Arrangements can be made to peruse specific items at the State Library, or the Hubbard office can be opened by request through the City of Hallowell : (207-623-4021).
