    Abstract: Palmer College of Chiropractic's Special Collections & Archives Department contains original source materials on chiropractic, osteopathy, homeopathy and other non-drug, non-surgical healing arts. Special Collections & Archives materials do not circulate. Access to the book, journal and most manuscript collections are open; College Archives materials access is restricted. Public service hours are 8:30 a. m. - 5:00 p.m, Monday - Friday; other times for access may be arranged by special appointment. SERVICES: Reference, photographic reproduction, digital reproduction and photocopy reproduction services are offered for a fee.
    Holdings: Monographs: 19th century - 200; 20th century - 7,100; 21st century - 200; Journals: 825 titles; Audiovisual: 7,000 items; Photographs/Prints: 3,000 items; Manuscripts: 1,500 linear feet; Archives: 2,000 linear feet. Holdings also include over 50 oral history interviews with pioneers and leaders in the chiropractic profession.

    Abstract: The collections of the UIHC Medical Museum consist of objects and other items related to the history of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the state of Iowa, and the Midwest region of the United States, which are suitable for display, research, educational use, and loan. The collections also reflect our focus on current health care issues. SERVICES: Responses to requests for information on medical topics are limited due to small staff. The primary use of the collections is display in onsite galleries, but scholars and students also use them for educational programs and onsite research.
    Holdings: Collections fall into three categories: the Permanent Collection, the Educational Collection, and the Archives. The Permanent Collection consists of objects and other items, such as photographs, documents, and books. The three-dimensional artifact collections are more than 5,000 items strong and include the following major categories: Ophthalmology (optical lenses, color-blindness test kits, stereoscopes, spectacles, ophthalmoscopes, surgical instruments, etc.); Dentistry (examination chairs, impression trays, dental forceps, etc.); Phlebotomy (fleams, cupping devices, counter-irritation devices, etc.); Surgical Instruments (some 250 items, including WWII surgical field kits, forceps, saws, ligature needles, retractors, etc.); UIHC History (1898 time capsule from first hospital building, yearbooks, portraits, programs, diplomas, journals, etc.); Diagnostic Equipment (approximately 150 items such as stethoscopes, early sphygmomanometers, microscopes, X-ray equipment, blood-glucose testing devices, reflex hammers, etc.); Obstetrics/Gynecology (fetal stethoscopes, forceps, cranial crushers, ether inhaler, etc.); Cardiology (early portable EKG, heart valves, mold for prosthetic blood vessels, etc.); Otolaryngology (monochord, otoscopes, bronchoscopes, hearing aids, etc.); Miscellaneous (1930s examining chair used in the film "Field of Dreams", caned-seat wheelchair, syringe and hypodermic sets, examination tables, WWII first aid kit, appointment cards). Other categories include Anesthesiology, University of Iowa College of Medicine, General Medicine, Homeopathic Medicine, Internal Medicine, Nursing, Orthopedics, Pathology, Pediatrics, Pharmaceuticals, Psychiatry, Radiology, Therapeutic Devices, and Urology. The photographic collection includes several hundred photographs and negatives, images of current medical procedures and equipment. The manuscripts and documents collection from the mid-1800s to the present includes approximately 400 medical and nursing texts, medical record books, physicians, journals, photo albums, and over 100 books and documents. The Education Collection is a small collection of items used for educational programs and demonstrations. The Archives consists of documentation relevant to the institutional history of the UIHC Medical Museum.

    Abstract: The nearly 6,500 volumes in the John Martin Rare Book Room are devoted to the history of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and the allied and basic sciences. Books, reprints, and out-of-print journals dealing with the history of medicine at the University and in the state of Iowa are housed in the Rare Book Room. In addition to the printed materials, the collection contains nearly 1,000 slides illustrating the history of the health sciences as well as selected audiotapes of presentations given at meetings of the History of Medicine Society. The books and the limited number of specially selected journals in the collection consist of important works concerning classic contributions to the history of the health sciences. The John Martin Rare Book Room is located on the fourth floor of the Hardin Library and is normally open Monday - Friday from 8am - 4pm or by appointment.     Holdings: The John Martin Rare Book Room contains approximately 5,000 volumes illustrating the full range of the history of medicine dating from the 15th through the 20th centuries. The collection is especially rich in early anatomical atlases and includes a first edition of Adreas Vesalius' Fabrica as well as Paolo Mascagni's Anatomia Universa, a set of 88 plates each measuring 99 cm by 72 cm that are on permanent display. Heirs of Hippocrates (1990), an annotated and illustrated book catalog of the most important works in the collection, is an internationally recognized bibliography in the history of medicine.     Abstract: The Iowa State Special Collections Department began focusing on veterinary medicine collections in 1983 to complement the Parks Library's extensive book collection in the field and to provide primary sources for the use of researchers interested in agricultural history, the history of science and technology, and the history of veterinary medicine. The collection includes manuscript collections from veterinary medicine organizations and individual veterinarians. Some of the more substantial collections are the records of the American Association of Avian Pathologists, the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, the Livestock Conservation Institute, the Society for the Study of Reproduction, and the Western Veterinary Medical Association. There are several collections dealing with the efforts to eradicate hog cholera, including records of the Fort Dodge (Iowa) Laboratories that focus on the development of the manufacturing process for hog cholera serum. Departmental hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. SERVICES: Photocopying, photo-reproduction, reference.
    Holdings: The Archives currently contain 94 veterinary manuscript and university archives collections measuring 500 linear feet. Inventories exist or are in preparation for the majority of these collections. Holdings also include oral history interviews of women in the medical sciences and in veterinary medicine.

    Abstract: The Palmer Foundation for Chiropractic History maintains a chiropractic museum throughout the building at 115 W. 7th Street. Other exhibits are located on the Palmer College campuses in Davenport; San Jose, California; and Port Orange, Florida. The museum is open from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. weekdays and on the weekend by appointment with school is in session. The Foundation also maintains the B. J. and Mabel Palmer Residence located at 808 Brady Street in Davenport. The Residence is open for tours by appointment only. The Foundation collects artifacts relating to all aspects of chiropractic history. The Foundation works in conjunction with the Palmer Special Collections and Archives to answer historical reference questions. Collections can be made available for scholarly research.
    Holdings: Major collections include the Palmer Osteological collection and a collection of chiropractic adjusting tables. Chiropractic artifacts: 6,000+ items.
