    Abstract: The Amistad Research Center is a repository created to collect original source materials for the study of the histories and cultures of African-American and other ethnic minorities (Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and Hispanic-Americans). With over ten million unique manuscript pieces, it holds the nation's largest collection of primary source materials in the field of ethnic history. The collections show particular strengths in education, civil rights, race relations, business, fine arts, the courts, politics, and social history. The Center also holds a magnificent collection of African-American art and a large collection of African art. SERVICES: Holdings are available to the public. Photocopying, photographic reproduction, and interlibrary loan are available, with restrictions on certain holdings. The Amistad Research Center is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    Holdings: Major holdings in the Manuscript Collection include the papers of the following physicians and hospital administrators: Herbert J. Allen (c. 1943-92); Leonard Burns (1963- ); Ernest E. Cherrie, Jr. (1927-76); Arthur T. Davidson (c. 1976-84); Albert W. Dent (1928-84); Rivers Frederick (1893-1958); Joseph A. Hardin (1932-76); Clarence C. Haydel (1956-71); William F. Holmes (c. 1875-1911); Alexander L. Jackson II (1890-1981); Aubre De L. Maynard (1973-c. 1977); Isidore L. Robbins (1925-80); Robert Ambrose Thornton (1922-1982); Dr. Henry E. Braden III (1936-1994), who was also a member of WWII medical corps. The Collection also includes the papers of several women health workers: Ethel Mae Griggs (1967-71); Juanita P. Johnson (1923-28); Mary L. Mills (1962-74); Mabel K. Staupers (1930-77, n.d.). Holdings also include medical information relating to the following associations: The American Missionary Association (1858-1991), 173+ linear feet, including the papers of Dr. Charles Ryder and the Ryder Hospital in Puerto Rico; the Dillard University Papers, which contain photographs and records from the Flint-Goodridge Hospital; and the Associated Black Charities Records (1982-88), primarily issues of Blackboard, the official organ of this health and human services agency. The Center also houses numerous theses, dissertations, publications, and writings on medical issues, including the important essay, The Negro in Medicine in Louisiana, by A. P. Tureaud and Dr. C. C. Haydel, 1935.

    Abstract: The Sophia at Smith Collection is an internationally recognized repository of manuscripts, archives, photographs, periodicals and other primary sources in women’s history. It was founded in 1942 to be the library’s distinctive contribution to the college’s mission of educating women. The staff regularly responds to reference requests by phone, mail, fax, e-mail, and in person. A picture I. D. is required on the first visit. Although it is not necessary to notify the reference staff in advance of a visit, researchers are encouraged to do so to be certain that the materials they wish to use are available. They may also request finding aids be sent in advance. Photocopying and reproduction of images and audiovisual materials are available upon request. For more information, visit our website.
    Holdings: The SSC consists of over 600 collections (almost 10,000 linear feet) of material in manuscript, print, photographic and audiovisual formats. The holdings document the historical experience of women in the United States and abroad from the colonial era to the present. Subject strengths include birth control and reproductive rights, women’s rights, suffrage, the contemporary women’s movement, U. S. women working abroad, the arts, the professions, and family life. Many of these collections are rich sources of visual, as well as manuscript and printed material. Included are a number of collections and oral histories of women in medicine (physicians, nurses, public health specialists, medical missionaries, midwives, and medical researchers). The SSC also holds many more collections related to women’s health, particularly in the area of reproductive in the U. S. and internationally. These include the records of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), New England Hospital for Women and Children, National Women’s Health Network, Midwives’ Alliance of North America, the Population and Reproductive Health Oral History Project, the Margaret Sanger Papers, and many others.

    Abstract: University Archives collections document the history of the University of Pennsylvania. The medical history records document the activities of the School of Medicine from its founding in 1765 - including students and faculty; the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and associated institutions; personal papers of physicians, and records related to medical research. The Archives is open to researchers by appointment. Photocopying and image reproduction services are available.
    Holdings: The University Archives holds over 1,600 cubic feet of records related to medical history. Included are the records of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Presbyterian Hospital, papers of I. S. Ravdin and Helen Octavia Dickens, and the records of the faculty of the School of Medicine. Additionally, the University Archives holds publications and reports related to the School of Medicine and the Hospital.
