    Abstract: The James J. Waring, M.D., History of Medicine and Health Sciences Collections contain approximately 10,000 titles in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and biology, reflecting the history of the health sciences and the University of Colorado Denver Anschultz Medical Campus. The circulating collection consists of ca. 6,000 modern works on the history of medicine and nonrare works published between 1875 and 1913. The Rare Materials Collections consists of ca. 4700 titles. Most circulating items are accessible through the library's online catalog, IMPULSE (<a href="http://hslibrary.ucdenver.edu/" >http://hslibrary.ucdenver.edu/</a>.). Approximately 50% of the rare book collection is searchable via IMPULSE.
    Holdings: The Rare Materials Collection contain ca. 170 artifacts and some archival materials, but the bulk of the collection consists of printed materials from the 15th through the 20th centuries, with its greatest strength in 19th century publications. Subject strengths include tuberculosis and respiratory medicine, cardiology, and homeopathy. The collection has grown primarily by gift, with the largest donations coming from the libraries of James J. Waring, M.D., Gerald Bertram Webb, M.D., Charles Denison, M.D., and Florence Rena Sabin, M.D. Items in the rare book collection are available for use by appointment between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Wednesdays and 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Fridays, and other times by special arrangement.

    Abstract: Special Collections includes materials in all formats on the history of the health sciences and ancillary disciplines, the East Asian Collection of health-related materials in Asian languages, and the University Archives, which collects administrative records and materials on the history and development of the UCSF campus (an all health sciences campus). Specific subject emphases include anatomy and physiology; dentistry; pharmacy; nursing; obstetrics and gynecology; forensic medicine and toxicology; high altitude physiology; cholera and communicable diseases; occupational medicine; homeopathy; alternative medicine; California; Sir William Osler and his circle (Cushing, Garrison, etc.); tuberculosis; women in medicine; anesthesiology; smallpox in Mexico; managed care; antivivisection; AIDS; biotechnology; tobacco control.     Abstract: The historical collections of the LSUHSC Libraries consist of rare and historic books, journals, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, photographs, prints, and ephemera. Louisiana Dentistry - collection includes documents from the Louisiana Dental Association; instruments, equipment, and early x-ray rubes from the office of C. Edmund Kells; composite pictures of Loyola School of Dentistry graduates 1914-1971; documents from early dental schools in Louisiana. Medical Memorabilia Collection - includes an examination table, doctor's bags, instruments, and a porcelain bedpan. Medical Portraits Collection – contains prints and reproductions of famous persons in medicine. Medical Textbooks Collection – includes historical textbooks covering medical treatments and practical concerns from the 14th century through early 20th. Pamphlets Collections – includes the Louisiana Medicine Pamphlet Collection, pamphlets and reprints relating to medicine in Louisiana, covers the 19th century through early 20th; 168 pieces Medical Catalog Collection – includes a collection of medical catalogs (instruments and supplies) from the 19th century; 33 pieces. Medical School Catalog Collection – includes School of Medicine catalogs from the 19th century; 67 pieces. Miscellanous Pamphlet Collection - includes pamphlets and reprints on medical topics from the 19th century; 82 pieces. Yellow Fever Pamphlet Collection – includes pamphlets and reprints relating to yellow fever dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries; 174 pieces.     Abstract: Access to the collections and reference assistance are available Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Researchers from out of town are requested to make arrangements in advance. Photographic reproduction of materials will be arranged at cost. Photocopying is discouraged, though exceptions may be made at the discretion of the librarian.
    Holdings: The rare book collections comprise some 2,500 titles printed before 1800; 10,000 19th century titles; and 5,000 titles published between 1900 and 1950. Although all areas of the biomedical sciences are represented, the rare book collections are particularly strong in early printed anatomy, obstetrics & gynecology, orthopedics, dentistry, cholera, yellow fever and American popular medicine. Catalogs have been published that describe two of these collections: An Annotated Catalog of the Miner Yellow Fever Collection (Rochester, NY: Edward G. Miner Library, 1990); and the two-volume Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform (Rochester, NY: University of Rochester Press, 2001-2004). The collection of printed materials includes nearly a thousand 18th through early 20th century biomedical periodicals published in the United States, Great Britain, and Europe. Special collections are supplemented by some 5,000 secondary works on the history of the biomedical sciences housed within the department. Faculty manuscript collections comprise the greater part of our archival collections. These include the papers of such figures as founding dean and Nobel prize winner George Hoyt Whipple; the psychiatrists John Romano and George Engel; physiologists Wallace Osgood Fenn and Edward Adolph, the papers of each of the School of Nursing deans, etc. Inventories for faculty and non-faculty collections are accessible on the Rare Books & Manuscripts website. 5,000 prints and negatives comprise the archival photograph collection, providing views of buildings, laboratories, patient care areas, medical & nursing class photos, portraits of faculty & staff, etc. taken from 1922 to 1970.

    Abstract: The archives provide information on the Boston University Medical Center and its component institutions: Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine and Public Health, the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences, the hospital and its affiliates. Physical access to this collection is for onsite use only. Online access to a collection of BU Medical Campus publications is available via the OpenBU digital repository. SERVICES: Reference, photocopy and photo-reproduction. Researchers should arrange appointments to ensure availability of materials and workspace. The history of medicine collection is a circulating one. SERVICES: Reference, photocopy, photo-reproduction and library loan.
    Holdings: The archives collection contains 1 17th century title, 90 18th century titles and 375 19th century titles. The archive journals from 1848 to the present provide school catalogs, annual reports, in-house publications and yearbooks. The hospital records, primarily administrative and financial in nature and kept in file cabinets, cover 1855-1964. These encompass the Mass. Homoeopathic Hospital, the Mass. Memorial Hospitals and University Hospital—all predecessors of the Boston Medical Center. The file cabinet collections of the Medical, Dental, Public Health Schools, along with the Graduate Medical Sciences Division, provide administrative and budgetary information about the schools but also their particular education programs and research projects. The images collection of over 1000 items cover individual students, faculty, staff and alumni of the medical center and its components; class pictures from the different schools; buildings (interiors and exteriors) and environs of the past, present and future. The Medical instruments collection has 300 pieces used in surgery and general practice. The Doris Appel History of Medicine Collection of over 2200 titles, named in 1980 in honor of the well known medical historian and sculptor, has a wide variety of offerings: general sweep of history from antiquity to modern times; medicine in various countries and time periods; discoveries, trends and developments; rise of specialties; organizational histories; and biographies of famous physicians and those who are well known in their communities.
