    Abstract: The College was founded in 1599 and the Library in 1698. The Library provides a service to Fellows and Members and all interested in the history of medicine, particularly in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. Written, email and fax requests are welcome. The library's online catalogue is available at <a href="http://knowledge.scot.nhs.uk/home/library-search.aspx" > http://knowledge.scot.nhs.uk/home/library-search.aspx </a>. Please note that currently about a third of the College's total holdings of approximately 31,500 volumes are available on the online catalogue. The Library is open from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm Monday - Friday. Visitors are requested to make an appointment.
    Holdings: The College Library contains many of the key medical, anatomical and surgical texts of the 16th and 17th centuries, being particularly strong in the areas of anatomy, medicine, surgery, botany and materia medica in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The library of Dr William Mackenzie (1791-1868), founder of the Glasgow Eye Infirmary is held as a separate collection. There are, as a consequence, good holdings in historical material relating to the diseases and surgery of the eye. Local historians are well served by the Glasgow Collection consisting of works relating to the history of Glasgow and the West of Scotland. There are just over 100 archive collections including the papers of Sir Ronald Ross (1857-1932), Sir William Macewen (1848-1924) and Dr William Mackenzie (1791-1868).

    Abstract: The College's specialist holdings in the history of medicine, inherited from the former British Optical Association, are split across the library and museum departments. The collections of both may be consulted by the general public on application and the museum exhibitions, which change regularly, may be visited by prior appointment. The historical book collections, covering the whole subject of optics, ophthalmic science and ocular health are strictly reference only. Items from the museum collection are potentially available for short-term loan to temporary exhibitions at recognised museums.     Holdings: The Library possesses about 500 pre-1850 titles, about 1000 titles published between 1850 and 1920 and about 5000 post-1920 titles. The Museum possesses over 12,000 catalogued items of which approximately 20% are two-dimensional works on paper including antique prints, historic trade literature and photographs. Additional archives are being listed on an ongoing basis.

    Abstract: The University of Manchester Library Special Collections has custody of an internationally significant collection of printed books, archives, manuscripts and visual materials. The Special Collections Division was created in 1972 by the merger of the University of Manchester Library and the John Rylands Library. Our holdings include extensive printed and archive collections relating to the history of medicine. The medical collections are held on two sites: the main University Library (post-1801 medical printed collections and medical archives) and the John Rylands Library (pre-1801 medical printed collections). SERVICES: Imaging service; written, email and phone inquiries. Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10:00 a.m. - 7.00 p.m. Thursday; 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sundays and bank holidays. New readers will need to show evidence of identity and proof of permanent address.
    Holdings: Printed collections are based on the library of the Manchester Medical Society founded in 1834, and also incorporate the libraries of the Manchester Royal Infirmary and St Mary's Hospital. There are approximately 75,000 volumes including 2,500 pre1701, 19,000 1701-1800 and 54,000 post 1800. Archive collections include the Manchester Medical Collection, an assemblage of documents on the history of medicine in Greater Manchester from the 18th century to the present day; the medical manuscripts collection, which includes papers of Thomas Radford, Joseph Jordan, and Charles Clay; archives of local medical and health care societies including the Manchester Medical Society, the Association of Certifying Factory Surgeons, Association of Medical Officers of Health (North West branch), and International Society of Radiographers and Radiographic Technicians; and the personal archives of the Harry Platt, Geoffrey Jefferson, John Charnley, John Wilkinson, Ian Isherwood and Robert Stirland.
