    Abstract: The Historic Library of Pennsylvania Hospital holds a unique collection of medical books, pamphlets, and journals, which served as a working library for the staff and students of the Hospital from 1762 to 1940. The Archives of the Hospital is comprised of many types of historic records and manuscripts, which chronicle the history of the institution since its founding in 1751. The collections represent a major research resource for the scholarly study of the first hospital in the nation, as well as documenting early theory and practice of American medicine and psychiatry. Other special collections include photographs, artifacts, fine art, and decorative art. SERVICES: The Historic Library and Archives are open to researchers, though appointments with the Archivist must be made in advance. Researchers use records on microfilm when possible. Photocopying of original material at discretion of Archivist. Photo reproductions possible.
    Holdings: Archives (1751-present): approximately 2,500 linear feet of records of the Hospital, the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital (formerly Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane); records of affiliate institutions (the Philadelphia Lying-In Charity, the Maternity Hospital, and their nurse-training schools, the Philadelphia and Southern Dispensaries; the Preston Retreat; the Humane Society, and the Nurse Charity). Historic Library (1483-1930): 13,000 volumes, primarily European and American medical texts on materia medica, surgery, psychiatry, life sciences, natural history, botanicals, and anatomical atlases. Photographs: 22,000 images (albumen, magic lantern slides, silver gelatin, and color). Artifacts (1700-present): medical and scientific equipment and kits and personal belongings of staff members.     Abstract: The Hagströmer Library is a research library as well as a museum of book history and scientific print culture. Dedicated to old and rare books in the history of medicine and allied sciences, the library was founded in 1997. The holdings comprise the historic collections of the Swedish Society of Medicine (founded in 1807), and Karolinska Institutet (founded in 1910), including medical books from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (donated in 1848). The Library also holds manuscripts and books from the Swedish Collegium Medicum (1663-1830), and deposited collections from the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society, Stockholm’s Institute of Metallography, and the Swedish Odontological Society.     Abstract: University Archives collections document the history of the University of Pennsylvania. The medical history records document the activities of the School of Medicine from its founding in 1765 - including students and faculty; the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and associated institutions; personal papers of physicians, and records related to medical research. The Archives is open to researchers by appointment. Photocopying and image reproduction services are available.
    Holdings: The University Archives holds over 1,600 cubic feet of records related to medical history. Included are the records of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Presbyterian Hospital, papers of I. S. Ravdin and Helen Octavia Dickens, and the records of the faculty of the School of Medicine. Additionally, the University Archives holds publications and reports related to the School of Medicine and the Hospital.     Abstract: ​The University Libraries consist of Nami Jafet Memorial Library as the main library which also includes the Archives and Special Collections, the Engineering and Architecture Library, the Saab Memorial Medical Library, and the Science and Agriculture Library, with its annex library at the Agricultural Research and Education Center (AREC) in the Beqa'a Valley. The first Library was founded with the University in 1866. Jafet Library was founded in 1952 and the Medical Library was founded in 1975.     Holdings: The collections consist of 450,000 print book titles, 1,000,000 electronic books, 5,000 print periodical titles (2,000 in Arabic), and hundreds of local and regional journals and newspapers going back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The libraries also provide access to 130,000 electronic periodicals and subscribe to 350 databases. The Archives and Special Collections contain 934 linear feet of archival material, 1,800 manuscripts (most of which are in Arabic), 10,000 rare books, 10,000 theses, projects, and dissertations going back to the early 20th century, 5,000 posters, 800 postcards, and 1,700 maps, as well as 72,000 photographs (including over 20,000 negatives) of unique and historical nature. Many of the books and manuscripts in the Archives and Special Collections cover Arab and Islamic science and medicine and the achievements of Arab and Muslim physicians and scientists during the medieval ages.
