In 2009 the collection was transferred to the care of the Department of Special Collections at the General Library, University of California, Davis, where the collection would have better environment housing and be part of the larger Special Collections rare book collection. The emphasis was (and continues to be) the acquisition of historical materials which, because of the format (portfolios and fragile material), are subject to damage or loss with unsupervised use. The collection includes works considered to be illustrative of the history and trends of both medicine and veterinary medicine, especially the area of equine medicine. Older veterinary medical texts cover the period from the early 1600s through the late 1800s. The veterinary collection, comprised chiefly of British and American imprints, also includes a few classic French and English periodicals. The collection is represented in teh OCLC database. As a National Historic Landmark recognized for its ongoing value to the health of the military and to the nation, the Museum identifies, collects, and preserves important and unique resources to support a broad agenda of innovative exhibits, educational programs, and scientific, historical and medical research. Formerly the Armed Forces Medical Museum, NMHM holds history of medicine material including the records of the Army Medical Museum and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. SERVICES: The museum is open to the public every day (except Dec. 25) from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. Group tours can be arranged with advance notice. The museum is open for research to qualified researchers. Reference services are available by telephone, mail and electronic mail. The archival collections consist of about 1,700 linear feet. Of this, there are about 1,000 films and about 300,000 photographs in all media dating from the 1850's. The collection includes manuscript collections from veterinary medicine organizations and individual veterinarians. Some of the more substantial collections are the records of the American Association of Avian Pathologists, the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, the Livestock Conservation Institute, the Society for the Study of Reproduction, and the Western Veterinary Medical Association. There are several collections dealing with the efforts to eradicate hog cholera, including records of the Fort Dodge (Iowa) Laboratories that focus on the development of the manufacturing process for hog cholera serum.
