    Abstract: Founded in 1980, the Museum of Vision strives to preserve ophthalmic heritage and to inspire appreciation of vision science, ophthalmology and contributions made toward preventing blindness worldwide. This is accomplished through a collection which includes artifacts, books, and archives. In 2004, Dr. Stanley M. Truhlsen established an endowment to fund the Stanley M. Truhlsen, MD Director of Ophthalmic Heritage within the Museum of Vision, a position currently held by Jenny Benjamin. SERVICES: image rights and reproduction, historical research, object identification (not appraisal), elementary school curriculum (available on-line only). EXHIBITS: Museum of Vision is open by appointment, Monday through Friday 10 am – 5 pm, no admission fee. WEBSITE: includes a searchable collections database, exhibits, and access to biographies, oral histories, and educational resources.
    Holdings: The museum’s holdings can be divided into museum, library, and archive. MUSEUM: holds over 10,500 artifacts including ancient and modern examples of alternative medicine, art, furniture, instruments, memorabilia, numismatics, philately, pharmaceuticals, and vision aids. Holdings include The Harriet and J. William Rosenthal, MD Collection. LIBRARY: holds over 2,000 books with over 200 rare volumes including the Spencer E. Sherman, MD Antique Ophthalmology Book Collection, the M. Wallace Friedman, MD Rare Book Collection. ARCHIVE: holds over 35 collections of corporate records, personal papers, photographs, oral histories, and film. Corporate records include the American Academy of Ophthalmology and its predecessor, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, The Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Optical Company. Special note should be made of the personal records in the archive of Drs. Rudolf Bock, Charles H. May, George K. Kambara, Carl Koller, Irving Leopold, Robert Machemer, Marshall M. Parks and Bruce Spivey.

    Abstract: Historical Collections at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is comprised of three units: the Reynolds Historical Library, the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences, and the UAB Archives. These units house a combined collection of rare and important medical books and manuscripts; equipment, instruments, and objects from the health sciences; the official records of the university; and private manuscript collections with an emphasis on the health sciences. Each academic year, the Reynolds Historical Lecture Series addresses some aspect of the health sciences. A newsletter, Treasures, is published three times a year.
    Holdings: Reynolds Historical Library: Medical manuscripts, some dating to the Middle Ages; medical incunabula; printed books from the 16th through the 20th centuries, including concentrations in the fields of dentistry, Arabic language medical texts, and Daniel Drake; letters of Florence Nightingale, Louis Pasteur, Sir William Osler, and John R. Smythies; and a collection of rare medical manikins carved in ivory. Significant collections include printed works by and about the pioneer American physician Daniel Drake and the papers of the Southern Surgical Association. Guides to the Collection: Rare Books and Collections of the Reynolds Historical Library (1968); Rare Books and Collections of the Reynolds Historical Library, vol.2 (1994); and A Catalogue of Books, Both Printed and Manuscript, in the Reynolds Historical Library Produced during the Course of the Eighteenth Century (1993). Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences: Preserves and displays equipment, instruments, and objects representing the history and development of the health sciences with special emphasis on the State of Alabama, and including the fields of medicine, nursing, ophthalmology, dentistry, public health, and allied health. The Nott Pathological Specimens, one of the most impressive collections at the Museum, are on permanent display. The wax anatomical models, representing common medical conditions in the 18th and 19th centuries, were purchased in Europe by Dr. Josiah Nott [1804-1873] and brought to Mobile, Alabama, in October 1860. Other exhibits are mounted on a rotating basis. UAB Archives: Over 1,700 cubic feet of university records and personal papers; over 40,000 photographic images; a collection of over 400 oral history interviews from Health Center personnel; and videotape and audiotape recordings. Health science holdings include personal papers of founding medical dean Dr. Roy R. Kracke, founding dental dean Dr. Joseph F. Volker, and founding nursing dean Dr. Florence A. Hixson; the papers of pioneering heart surgeon Dr. Luther Leonidas Hill; the papers of numerous health center faculty; and the official records of the vice presidents for Health Affairs and of the deans of medicine, dentistry, and nursing. Publications: Building on a Vision: A Fifty-Year Retrospective of UAB's Academic Health Center (1995); and Dictionary of Academic Units at UAB (1997).

    Abstract: The Eskind Biomedical Library Special Collections consists of the History of Medicine Collection (located in the History of Medicine Room on the third floor of the library) and the VUMC Archives at EBL. The History of Medicine Room is open to the public, but please contact us first before visiting to ensure the avilablity of resources. This is especially true for those researchers planning to work with manuscript or archival material. Many requests may not require a visit and can be answered remotely. We are open Monday - Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm (Central).

    Abstract: The History of Medicine Collection serves as a resource for students, faculty, and researchers in general. It contains early medical works of scholarly significance, pre-1850 original research, and medical classics. Subject coverage is broad with concentrations in early anatomy, surgery, pharmacy, obstetrics and gynecology, American medical literature from the early 1800s, the medieval motive of the b Dance of Death, lead poisoning, homeopathy, cardiology, pathology, and hernia repair. In mid- to late 2008 the rare collections of the Public Health and Dentistry libraries were incorporated into the History of Medicine Collection. The print collections are all cataloged and represented in the University of Michigan's online catalog Mirlyn (see Web address above).
    Holdings: With titles dating from 1470 to the early 20th century, the collections consist of approximately 6,300 monographs (primarily pre-1822 imprints), a small collection of journals, 82 incunabula, medical fugitive sheets, medical portraits, and a collection of 52 medical magic amulets from Late Antiquity. In addition, there is an extensive homeopathy collection, including the Bradford Collection of 1,027 pamphlets and the contents of the former University of Michigan Homeopathic Library. The History of Medicine Collection has grown primarily by gift, with the largest donations coming from the libraries of Le Roy Crummer, M.D., Lewis Stephen Pilcher, M. D., Aldred Scott Warthin, M.D., and George E. Wantz.
