    Abstract: GUAFM: Records of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Science The fonds are comprised of the records created by the Department of Forensic Medicine at the University in it roles of research, teaching, and medico-legal work for the Crown authorities. There are seven series reflecting the range of functions of the department. Series include departmental administrative records (including teaching materials), case files relating to criminal and civil cases as well as enquiries made upon the department, police photographs, departmental photographs, and materials relating to the production of departmental publications including textbooks, articles, and reports. DC 403: Papers of John Glaister Senior (1856-1932) and John Glaister Junior (1892-1971), Professors of Forensic Medicine The fonds consists of the personal and family papers of both Glaisters. These include Glaister Senior's student papers, correspondence, genealogical materials, and scrapbooks. Glaister Junior's papers include correspondence, notes and lectures, material relating to his writing of novels and his autobiography, material relating to the two television programmes he became involved with, as well as photographs and scrapbooks. Access Restrictions: Due to the Data Protection regulations, access to the records of the Department of Forensic Medicine [GUA FM] are restricted. Under the Data Protection Act 1998, personal data held on individuals is protected. Additional access restrictions are in place where material is deemed sensitive even though the data subject may be dead. Details of which records are restricted can be found in our online finding aids. There are no access restrictions on the Papers of John Glaister Senior (1856-1932) and John Glaister Junior (1892-1971), Professors of Forensic Medicine [DC 403]. These are open to anyone to consult. Reseachers may submit an application to access restricted materials providing they agree to certain obligations which enable Glasgow University Archive Services (GUAS) to protect the rights of data subjects as stipulated in the Data Protection Act.

    Abstract: The Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England contains collections of specimens and medical and scientific instruments relating to the history of anatomy, pathology, comparative anatomy, surgery and dentistry. Associated material includes paintings, drawings, manuscripts and other archive material relating to the history of the museum and its collections from 1800 - present. Loans of material from the collection can be made to other registered public museums subject to standard museum loan terms and conditions. The museum is open to the public without charge, and access to stored material can be provided for researchers subject to written request. Photographs or digital images of museum objects and archive material can be provided subject to conservation needs.
    Holdings: The Hunterian Collection contains approximately 3,500 specimens of human and comparative anatomy and pathology together with paintings and other artifacts made for or owned by the surgeon John Hunter (1728-1793). Other collections include approximately 40,000 specimens and microscope slides covering human and comparative anatomy and pathology from the period 1640 - present, together with approximately 10,000 instruments and other medical artifacts principally relating to the practice of surgery 1700 - present. Associated archive material includes annotated catalogues and other documentation relating to the development of the museum and its collections 1800 - present. Other archive material is held within the main College archive collection.

    Abstract: The University of Manchester Library Special Collections has custody of an internationally significant collection of printed books, archives, manuscripts and visual materials. The Special Collections Division was created in 1972 by the merger of the University of Manchester Library and the John Rylands Library. Our holdings include extensive printed and archive collections relating to the history of medicine. The medical collections are held on two sites: the main University Library (post-1801 medical printed collections and medical archives) and the John Rylands Library (pre-1801 medical printed collections). SERVICES: Imaging service; written, email and phone inquiries. Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10:00 a.m. - 7.00 p.m. Thursday; 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sundays and bank holidays. New readers will need to show evidence of identity and proof of permanent address.
    Holdings: Printed collections are based on the library of the Manchester Medical Society founded in 1834, and also incorporate the libraries of the Manchester Royal Infirmary and St Mary's Hospital. There are approximately 75,000 volumes including 2,500 pre1701, 19,000 1701-1800 and 54,000 post 1800. Archive collections include the Manchester Medical Collection, an assemblage of documents on the history of medicine in Greater Manchester from the 18th century to the present day; the medical manuscripts collection, which includes papers of Thomas Radford, Joseph Jordan, and Charles Clay; archives of local medical and health care societies including the Manchester Medical Society, the Association of Certifying Factory Surgeons, Association of Medical Officers of Health (North West branch), and International Society of Radiographers and Radiographic Technicians; and the personal archives of the Harry Platt, Geoffrey Jefferson, John Charnley, John Wilkinson, Ian Isherwood and Robert Stirland.
