The core of the rare book collection was purchased from Dr. Morris Saffron, and is rich in works on both dermatology and the history of medicine. Three other collections of note are: the Frank B. Norbury Collection (neurology and psychiatry); the Kemper/Buckmaster Collection (a 19th-early 20th century working physicians collection); and the William Moore Collection (homeopathy and popular medical texts). The archives consist of 334 linear feet of material dealing with Southern Illinois University's School of Medicine. A few manuscript materials are housed in special collections, mostly related to the central Illinois region. Reference service is available both in person and by phone. The hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or by appointment. Photocopying is by staff at their discretion. Holdings: The total number of volumes in the collection is 5,188. SERVICES: The museum is open to the public every day (except Dec. 25) from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. Group tours can be arranged with advance notice. The museum is open for research to qualified researchers. Reference services are available by telephone, mail and electronic mail. The museum's web site can be used as a beginning point to search the collections. Holdings: The museum has a small reference library with journals and monographs. The archival collections consist of about 1,700 linear feet. Of this, there are about 1,000 films and about 300,000 photographs in all media dating from the 1850's. Holdings also include the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) Oral History Collection. Anatomical collections hold 5,000 pathological skeletal specimens and 8,000 fluid-preserved pathological specimens. Historical collections contain approximately 13,000 medical equipment and instruments, including the Billings microscope collection of microscopes, accessories, microtomes and microscopic slides. Bruce Fye History of Medicine Library is a specialized library within the Mayo Medical Library, housing important collections in the history of medicine and allied sciences. Several thousand volumes of rare medical classics (from 1479) and early journal literature (from 1665) comprise the core collection of primary literature on all aspects of medicine and allied fields. Early medical imprints (pre-1875) and more recently published histories, biographies, facsimiles, and other support material comprise the remainder of the collection of some 23,000 total volumes. Non-book special collections include: medical bookplates, Vanity Fair caricatures of physicians and scientists; photographs of selected Nobel laureates and Mayo Clinic staff; caricatures of medical specialists by a Bavarian wood carver; Mayo Clinic related cartoons; medical philately, and heraldry.
