    Abstract: The Amistad Research Center is a repository created to collect original source materials for the study of the histories and cultures of African-American and other ethnic minorities (Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and Hispanic-Americans). With over ten million unique manuscript pieces, it holds the nation's largest collection of primary source materials in the field of ethnic history. The collections show particular strengths in education, civil rights, race relations, business, fine arts, the courts, politics, and social history. The Center also holds a magnificent collection of African-American art and a large collection of African art. SERVICES: Holdings are available to the public. Photocopying, photographic reproduction, and interlibrary loan are available, with restrictions on certain holdings. The Amistad Research Center is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    Holdings: Major holdings in the Manuscript Collection include the papers of the following physicians and hospital administrators: Herbert J. Allen (c. 1943-92); Leonard Burns (1963- ); Ernest E. Cherrie, Jr. (1927-76); Arthur T. Davidson (c. 1976-84); Albert W. Dent (1928-84); Rivers Frederick (1893-1958); Joseph A. Hardin (1932-76); Clarence C. Haydel (1956-71); William F. Holmes (c. 1875-1911); Alexander L. Jackson II (1890-1981); Aubre De L. Maynard (1973-c. 1977); Isidore L. Robbins (1925-80); Robert Ambrose Thornton (1922-1982); Dr. Henry E. Braden III (1936-1994), who was also a member of WWII medical corps. The Collection also includes the papers of several women health workers: Ethel Mae Griggs (1967-71); Juanita P. Johnson (1923-28); Mary L. Mills (1962-74); Mabel K. Staupers (1930-77, n.d.). Holdings also include medical information relating to the following associations: The American Missionary Association (1858-1991), 173+ linear feet, including the papers of Dr. Charles Ryder and the Ryder Hospital in Puerto Rico; the Dillard University Papers, which contain photographs and records from the Flint-Goodridge Hospital; and the Associated Black Charities Records (1982-88), primarily issues of Blackboard, the official organ of this health and human services agency. The Center also houses numerous theses, dissertations, publications, and writings on medical issues, including the important essay, The Negro in Medicine in Louisiana, by A. P. Tureaud and Dr. C. C. Haydel, 1935.

    Abstract: The Sophia at Smith Collection is an internationally recognized repository of manuscripts, archives, photographs, periodicals and other primary sources in women’s history. It was founded in 1942 to be the library’s distinctive contribution to the college’s mission of educating women. The staff regularly responds to reference requests by phone, mail, fax, e-mail, and in person. A picture I. D. is required on the first visit. Although it is not necessary to notify the reference staff in advance of a visit, researchers are encouraged to do so to be certain that the materials they wish to use are available. They may also request finding aids be sent in advance. Photocopying and reproduction of images and audiovisual materials are available upon request. For more information, visit our website.
    Holdings: The SSC consists of over 600 collections (almost 10,000 linear feet) of material in manuscript, print, photographic and audiovisual formats. The holdings document the historical experience of women in the United States and abroad from the colonial era to the present. Subject strengths include birth control and reproductive rights, women’s rights, suffrage, the contemporary women’s movement, U. S. women working abroad, the arts, the professions, and family life. Many of these collections are rich sources of visual, as well as manuscript and printed material. Included are a number of collections and oral histories of women in medicine (physicians, nurses, public health specialists, medical missionaries, midwives, and medical researchers). The SSC also holds many more collections related to women’s health, particularly in the area of reproductive in the U. S. and internationally.     Abstract: University Archives collections document the history of the University of Pennsylvania. The medical history records document the activities of the School of Medicine from its founding in 1765 - including students and faculty; the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and associated institutions; personal papers of physicians, and records related to medical research. The Archives is open to researchers by appointment. Photocopying and image reproduction services are available.
    Holdings: The University Archives holds over 1,600 cubic feet of records related to medical history. Included are the records of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Presbyterian Hospital, papers of I. S. Ravdin and Helen Octavia Dickens, and the records of the faculty of the School of Medicine. Additionally, the University Archives holds publications and reports related to the School of Medicine and the Hospital.     Abstract: The University of Manchester Library Special Collections has custody of an internationally significant collection of printed books, archives, manuscripts and visual materials. The Special Collections Division was created in 1972 by the merger of the University of Manchester Library and the John Rylands Library. Our holdings include extensive printed and archive collections relating to the history of medicine. The medical collections are held on two sites: the main University Library (post-1801 medical printed collections and medical archives) and the John Rylands Library (pre-1801 medical printed collections). SERVICES: Imaging service; written, email and phone inquiries. Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10:00 a.m. - 7.00 p.m. Thursday; 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sundays and bank holidays. New readers will need to show evidence of identity and proof of permanent address.
    Holdings: Printed collections are based on the library of the Manchester Medical Society founded in 1834, and also incorporate the libraries of the Manchester Royal Infirmary and St Mary's Hospital. There are approximately 75,000 volumes including 2,500 pre1701, 19,000 1701-1800 and 54,000 post 1800. Archive collections include the Manchester Medical Collection, an assemblage of documents on the history of medicine in Greater Manchester from the 18th century to the present day; the medical manuscripts collection, which includes papers of Thomas Radford, Joseph Jordan, and Charles Clay; archives of local medical and health care societies including the Manchester Medical Society, the Association of Certifying Factory Surgeons, Association of Medical Officers of Health (North West branch), and International Society of Radiographers and Radiographic Technicians; and the personal archives of the Harry Platt, Geoffrey Jefferson, John Charnley, John Wilkinson, Ian Isherwood and Robert Stirland.

    Abstract: ​The University Libraries consist of Nami Jafet Memorial Library as the main library which also includes the Archives and Special Collections, the Engineering and Architecture Library, the Saab Memorial Medical Library, and the Science and Agriculture Library, with its annex library at the Agricultural Research and Education Center (AREC) in the Beqa'a Valley.     Holdings: The collections consist of 450,000 print book titles, 1,000,000 electronic books, 5,000 print periodical titles (2,000 in Arabic), and hundreds of local and regional journals and newspapers going back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The libraries also provide access to 130,000 electronic periodicals and subscribe to 350 databases. The Archives and Special Collections contain 934 linear feet of archival material, 1,800 manuscripts (most of which are in Arabic), 10,000 rare books, 10,000 theses, projects, and dissertations going back to the early 20th century, 5,000 posters, 800 postcards, and 1,700 maps, as well as 72,000 photographs (including over 20,000 negatives) of unique and historical nature. Many of the books and manuscripts in the Archives and Special Collections cover Arab and Islamic science and medicine and the achievements of Arab and Muslim physicians and scientists during the medieval ages.
