    Abstract: The historical library and museum, established at the Cincinnati Medical Heritage Center in 1974, includes collections dating from the merger of the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine Library, the Cincinnati General Hospital Library, the College of Pharmacy, and private collections of David Tucker, Reuben Dimond Mussey, and others. The Mussey collection contains over 4,000 volumes and originated at the Medical College of Ohio. This collection is an intact working medical library of the early 19th century, comprising what the practitioner and student of that era used for study. The major strengths of the combined collections are: anatomy, physiology, materia medica, obstetrics, surgery, dermatology, and otology; more specifically, cholera, Civil War medicine, midwifery, eclectic, botanic, and homeopathic works, medical education in the 19th century West, and polio. The center also contains archives, photographs, medical artifacts and art works, as well as a video oral history collection of local physicians and scientists. SERVICES: Reference assistance in person, by phone, mail, and email. Interlibrary loans limited. Photocopying provided at cost.
    Holdings: Collection includes 40,000 volumes; 2 incunabula; 5,000 photographs; 1,500 medical instruments; 51 oral history videotapes; 150 diplomas; pre-Columbian and modern art collection; 5,000+ pamphlets; 1,637 linear feet of archives and manuscripts; hospital patient records from 1837 to 1881; a replica of a 15th century pharmacy (the 109-jar exhibit was first shown at the Paris Exposition in 1899.) Archive and manuscript collections include papers of Daniel Drake, Christian R. Holmes, Robert A. Kehoe, Leland Clark, Albert B. Sabin, and others.

    Abstract: Georgia Historical Society (GHS) is the premier independent statewide institution responsible for collecting, examining, and teaching Georgia history. GHS houses the oldest and most distinguished collection of materials related exclusively to Georgia history in the nation. The collection covers many subjects in medical history in the state of Georgia. Founded in 1839, the Georgia Historical Society is the oldest continuously operated historical society in the South. As an educational and research institution, GHS teaches Georgia history through a variety of educational programs, scholarly publications, and research services. It publishes the award-winning Georgia Historical Quarterly (Georgia's journal of record since 1917), maintains a library and archives, manages the Historical Marker Program for the State of Georgia, produces the daily television and radio program Today in Georgia History (in partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting), and organizes the annual K-12 education program Georgia History Festival. Headquartered in Savannah with an office in Atlanta, GHS has over 6,000 members and nearly 200 affiliates in 80 counties.
    Holdings: Within the library and archives is preserved an unparalleled collection of Georgia history, including more than 4 million manuscripts, 100,000 photographs, 30,000 architectural drawings, 15,000 rare and non-rare books, and thousands of maps, portraits, and artifacts. The Georgia Historical Society's vast collection includes such treasures as an original draft of the U.S. Constitution, one of only a handful in existence; a compass and snuff box belonging to Georgia founder James Oglethorpe; records related to the Cherokee Removal and Trail of Tears of 1836; and the correspondence of national figures such as U.S. presidents Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson, Confederate General Robert E. Lee, and Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low. The manuscript collection includes family papers, military records of every Georgia war, the papers of Georgia's major political leaders, colonial account books, diaries, plantation records, papers of social and cultural organizations, and business records ranging from the 18th through the 20th century. The periodical collection dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the visual material collection is made up of an impressive collection of photographs and other images including portraits of many of Georgia's most prominent leaders.

    Abstract: The Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead is a restored house museum, built 1854. Dr. & Sarah Pound were one of the founding families of Dripping Springs. Dr. Pound studied at the University of Kentucky in Louiseville. He practiced medicine in the house until shortly before he died in 1914. Our collection consists of medical instruments, journals, textbooks, daybooks, textiles. We also have an extensive collection of pharmaceuticals and containers. All items were used by Dr. Pound. Also, Dr. Pound's medical ledger with patient names, treatment, etc. We are currently beginning to catalog the collection with assistance of graduate students in Preservation Studies at the University of Texas, Austin. Our Collections Management Policy allows for public inspection of the collection at the Museum, subject to preservation requirements of the artifact and availability of museum staff or volunteers. Appointments for artifact research will be made in advance with the Executive Director, access is not guaranteed without an appointment. For extensive use of the Museum Collection, a researcher is to submit a research proposal prior to the visit.

    Abstract: The Hartford Medical Society has been in continuous existence since 1846. Society's library was a resource for continuing education for its members for more than 100 years. Strength are in 19th century American medicine. Collection is non-circulating and is still being added to the UConn Medical School online catalog. One, part-time librarian can provide ILL (digital copies only), reference, photocopying and scanning as time allows. Some of these services are fee-based. Some materials may be too fragile to photocopy/scan.
    Holdings: Collection consists of approximately 3000 volumes of monographs. Roughly 80% of these are 19th century. 10% are 20th century and 10% are 18th and earlier. No true incunabula, but a few 16th century volumes. The roughly 3000 volumes of bound journals are divided roughly 40% 19th century and 60% 20th century. Most are American publications. Archival collections consist of a small amount of correspondence, mostly of New England practitioners during the 18th and 19th centuries. Library holds an excellent collection of pamphlets with strengths in anesthesia and New England medicine. There are very few photographs, which are not cataloged. The collection also contains medical artifacts including surgical kits from the 19th century, cupping sets and the like. These too, alas, waiting to be cataloged.

The cornerstone of The Burns Archive is its unparalleled collection of early medical photography, but it is also renowned for its iconic images depicting the darker side of life: Death, Disease, Disaster, Mayhem, Crime, Racism, Revolution and War. Over the past forty years, thousands of publishers, exhibitors, authors, researchers, artists and filmmakers have utilized this unique source of visual documentation. Having produced dozens of books and having curated and contributed to frequent national and international museum and gallery exhibitions, The Burns Archive actively acquires, donates, researches, lectures, exhibits, consults, and shares its rare and unusual photographs and expertise worldwide.
    Holdings: Largest private archive of early medical photography (1847-1960), containing over 70,000 images related to the history of medicine, especially strong in nineteenth century imagery (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, etc). Our library contains hundreds of original journals, especially those related to medical photography, 1865-1930. Several books and articles on various aspects of medical specialties have been published from the collection.
